Is Switch 2 Worth Buying?: The 2026 Verdict - LoreGoblins

Is the Switch 2 Worth Buying Now? A Holiday 2026 Verdict

Yes, the Switch 2 is worth buying this holiday if you want to play Nintendo games and do not already own one, but it is no longer cheap. The US price rose from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026, and the bundles now start at $529.99.

If you are on the fence, the question is not “is it good.” It is “will I play enough of what is coming to justify $500.” I have not played one, so this verdict is about the price, the lineup and who should spend the money.

The Scroll in Brief

  • The Switch 2 costs $499.99 in the US as of October 2026, up from $449.99 on September 1.
  • Bundles: Mario Kart World with 3 months of Nintendo Switch Online is $549.99; Switch Sports Resort with the same membership is $529.99 (launches Oct 22).
  • The fall schedule is busy: Ocarina of Time (Nov 5), Pikmin 4 Switch 2 Edition (Nov 12), Monster Hunter Wilds (Dec 4) and more.
  • Nintendo says the market conditions behind the hike are expected to last, so do not bank on a big price cut.
  • Best for first-time Nintendo buyers and families; skip if your Switch 1 already covers what you play.

What it costs now

Nintendo raised the US price of the Switch 2 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. It was $449.99 before. Canada went from CA$629.99 to CA$679.99 and Europe from €469.99 to €499.99 (Thurrott).

Nintendo blamed “various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.” That wording is the reason I would not plan around a quick price drop.

Prices change, so check the live listing on Nintendo’s store before you buy.

The bundles worth knowing

BundleUS priceWhat you getDate
Switch 2 alone$499.99Console onlyAvailable now
Mario Kart World bundle$549.99Console, digital Mario Kart World, 3-month Nintendo Switch OnlineReturned in late September
Switch Sports Resort bundle$529.99Console, digital Switch Sports Resort, 3-month Nintendo Switch OnlineOctober 22
Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition$519.99Themed console, no game; see our Zelda edition verdictOctober 29

Nintendo says the Mario Kart World bundle saves $37.98 and the Sports Resort bundle $27.98 against buying the pieces separately (Nintendo Wire). A cheaper summer “Choose Your Game” bundle at $499.99 existed before the hike; I could not confirm it is still on sale.

The $20 Zelda price gap is explained in Final Boss: it is styling, not extra content.

What you will actually play

Here is what is dated on the schedule, as of early October 2026 (God Is a Geek):

DateGame
Oct 16Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remakes
Oct 22Nintendo Switch Sports Resort
Nov 5The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (remake)
Nov 12Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy
Dec 3Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Dec 4Monster Hunter Wilds
Dec 10Professor Layton and the New World of Steam
Jan 28, 2027Metroid Ravenous
Feb 25, 2027Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Definitive Edition
2027 (no date)Pokémon Vento and Pokémon Onda, Xenoblade Genesis

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave was dated for September 17, per Multiplayer.it. Splatoon Raiders was dated July 23 in the June Direct recap from Techloy.

That is a real line-up of Nintendo-made games and remakes through winter, plus a Pokémon pair in 2027. It is also a list I have not played, so the bet is on Nintendo’s track record, not mine.

Buy digital or physical?

New Nintendo exclusives now cost $10 less digitally in the US. Ocarina of Time is $59.99 digital and $69.99 physical, following the same split Nintendo started with Yoshi (Nintendo Life). Our physical vs digital guide covers when each wins.

Budget the games too. A console plus two $59.99 downloads is about $620 before any accessory.

Marge’s Verdict

Buy it if you are Nintendo-curious or a family that wants one console for the holidays. Skip it if you are only buying because the box looks cool.

The price hike stings and nobody should pretend otherwise. But there is no cheaper way into the new Nintendo games, and the fall schedule is busy through December. A bundle beats a bare console if you want one of the included games anyway.

If you can wait, the wait is for a game you cannot stop thinking about, not for a sale. Prices could still move, so confirm everything on the store page before you pay.
