She Won $2 Million After Her Family Left Her Off a Trip
A 28-year-old woman bought a lottery ticket on a whim and won more than $2 million. Her family, who she says left her off a big overseas trip months earlier, suddenly had plenty of ideas about how she should spend it.
She posted the whole saga to r/AITAH, where it drew more than 25,000 upvotes and over 5,000 comments, according to MEAWW’s write-up. Read the story first, then decide before you peek at Marge’s take.

The Scroll in Brief
- A 28-year-old won over $2 million on a lottery ticket and kept it quiet at first.
- Her mother, sister and brother each asked for money, and her father called it “family money.”
- She says she learned of the family’s overseas trip from her sister’s social media, after being told she probably wouldn’t want to come.
- Marge says winning the lottery doesn’t make her the family bank, and a clear, calm “no” beats a fight.
The Verdict: 😇 Not the villain. Her ticket, her money, and a family that skipped her for the trip can’t claim a share by guilt alone. Sharing is a gift, not a debt.

The Short Version
The poster says she grew up as the family’s “black sheep,” with an older brother (30) and a younger sister (25) treated as the favorites. A few months before her win, she learned of a major overseas family trip from her sister’s social media. When she asked about it, her mother said the family figured she wouldn’t want to come and that money was tight. She let it go.
About a month before the story was written, she bought a lottery ticket and won over $2 million. She paid off debts, planned some investments and set aside money for fun. She didn’t tell her family right away, because she didn’t want to be treated differently.
Then she bought a new car, word spread, and the requests started. Her mother called keeping the money selfish given the family’s financial struggles. Her sister hinted she should cover her student loans. Her brother asked her to buy him a house.
She told them she isn’t obligated to share just because they’re related, pointing to the trip as an example of how she’s been treated. Her father replied that this was different because it was “family money.” The family now calls her ungrateful, and she asked the internet whether she was wrong to say no.
What the Internet Said
The majority sided with her, according to MEAWW’s roundup of the replies.
- It’s her money. Several commenters said the winnings belong to her, not the family, and that the asks would keep coming.
- Opportunists. Others said the family only noticed her when there was something to gain.
- Not family when it counted. One asked whether she was treated as family at all before the win, given the trip.
- No entitlement. Another said that even without the history, nobody is owed a share of someone else’s winnings.
Marge’s Ruling
Marge says not the villain, with a side of “you may want a financial adviser and a firm script.” The ticket was hers, and being left off a trip she heard about online is a fair reason to be wary when the same people show up with their hands out.
That said, a sudden $2 million can rewrite a family, and a flat refusal to everyone may leave her isolated. If she wants peace, she can decide what, if anything, she chooses to give as a gift, set the amount herself, and say clearly that it isn’t up for negotiation. Giving out of guilt is how people end up with a house-sized request every holiday.
