Best Short Games You Can Finish in a Weekend (October 2026)
These are 11 well-reviewed PC games whose main story takes about five hours or less, based on HowLongToBeat times listed on Deku Deals. That means you can finish most of them in a single weekend, and often in a single evening. Prices below are Steam’s regular US prices as of October 2026.
My short answer: start with A Short Hike if you want the lightest, cheapest option, What Remains of Edith Finch for a story you can finish in one sitting, and Portal for the best puzzle game at ten bucks.
The Scroll in Brief
- Every game here has a listed main-story time of 5 hours or less. Completionist times are longer for some, so check the table.
- Shortest: A Short Hike (about 1.5 hours), Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch (about 2 hours each).
- Cheapest at regular price: A Short Hike ($7.99), then Portal and Oxenfree ($9.99 each).
- Priciest: Stray at $29.99 and INSIDE at $24.99. Both are worth waiting on for a sale.
- Times are for a typical player and will vary. Prices and review scores change, so check the store page.
How I picked these
A game made the list if its HowLongToBeat main-story time is under about five hours, its Steam user reviews are strong, and I could read both the price and the time from a live page. I have not played these myself. The takes below come from store pages, review scores and how each game is described.
Main story means the shortest path to the credits. Completionist times are noted because a few games (Portal, Superliminal, Stray, Oxenfree) stretch well past ten hours if you chase everything.
Quiet and Cozy
A Short Hike

Regular price about $7.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2019 · Exploration adventure · Single-player
Length: about 1.5 hours main story, 4.5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 99% positive on Steam (12.5k+ reviews).
Steam describes it as a relaxed 3D exploration game where you hike, climb and glide through a mountain park on your way to the summit. It is the shortest game on this list and the cheapest at regular price.
If you have an afternoon and want to feel good at the end of it, this is the pick.
Best for: a low-stress afternoon, or anyone who thinks they do not like games.
Journey

Regular price about $14.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2020 (PC release) · Adventure · Single-player and online co-op
Length: about 2 hours main story, 6 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 92% positive on Steam (12.7k+ reviews).
Steam’s description is short: soar above ruins and glide across sands to discover the world’s secrets. Online co-op is listed, so you may meet another traveler along the way.
It is built to be played in one sitting. Turn the lights down.
Best for: a single evening with headphones on.
Unpacking

Regular price about $19.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2021 · Relaxing puzzle sim · Single-player
Length: about 3.5 hours main story, 4.5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 93% positive on Steam (23k+ reviews).
You unpack a character’s belongings into a series of new homes. The items you place reveal clues about her life, so the story comes from the objects instead of dialogue.
It is tagged Relaxing and Cute on Steam. At the regular price it is a little steep for the length, so a sale helps.
Best for: people who like tidying, decorating and quiet storytelling.
GRIS

Regular price about $14.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2018 · Platform adventure · Single-player
Length: about 3.5 hours main story, 6.5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 95% positive on Steam (27k+ reviews).
Steam describes a young girl processing a painful experience as she crosses a faded, dreamlike world. The store page says the game is non-violent, has almost no text, and mixes light puzzles with platforming.
The hand-drawn art is the draw here. It is a good pick if you want something emotional without any fighting.
Best for: a calm, beautiful game with no combat.
Story Games You Can Finish in One Sitting
What Remains of Edith Finch

Regular price about $19.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2017 · Narrative adventure · Single-player
Length: about 2 hours main story, 3 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 94% positive on Steam (18k+ reviews).
Steam calls it a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state. You explore the Finch house as Edith and learn how each family member died, so expect some dark themes. The ESRB rating is Teen.
At about two hours it is easy to finish in one night, and the price comes down often enough that I would not rush at $19.99.
Best for: story fans who want something short and memorable.
Firewatch

Regular price about $19.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2016 · Mystery adventure · Single-player
Length: about 4 hours main story, 5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 89% positive on Steam (56k+ reviews).
You play Henry, a fire lookout in 1989 Wyoming whose only contact is his supervisor Delilah over a radio. When something strange pulls you into the forest, your choices shape the relationship and the mystery.
Steam notes adult conversations and some nudity or sexual content, so it is not one for younger players.
Best for: a grown-up mystery with a lot of talking and walking.
Oxenfree

Regular price about $9.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2016 · Supernatural thriller · Single-player
Length: about 4.5 hours main story, 13 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 91% positive on Steam (6.8k+ reviews).
A group of friends accidentally opens a ghostly rift during an overnight island party. You play Alex, who brought her stepbrother Jonas along.
The completionist time is much longer than the main story, so it works as a weekend game if you only chase the story. Steam tags it Supernatural, Mystery and Thriller.
Best for: friends-and-ghosts story fans on a budget.
Puzzle and Atmosphere
Portal

Regular price about $9.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2007 · First-person puzzle · Single-player

Valve’s puzzle classic has you solving physics puzzles by opening portals inside Aperture Science. The main story is about three hours, with a longer tail if you go after the extras.
For ten dollars it is the easiest recommendation on this page.
Best for: puzzle fans, and anyone who skipped the classics.
INSIDE

Length: about 3.5 hours main story, 4.5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 96% positive on Steam (24k+ reviews).
Steam’s pitch: hunted and alone, a boy is drawn into the center of a dark project. It is tagged Atmospheric, Dark, Puzzle Platformer and Multiple Endings, and carries an ESRB Mature rating for blood and violence.
It is the second most expensive game here, so I would wait for a discount.
Best for: a dark, moody puzzle game with no dialogue to read.
Superliminal

Regular price about $19.99 as of Oct 2026 · 2020 · Perspective puzzle · Single-player
Length: about 2.5 hours main story, 10.5 hours completionist (HowLongToBeat times via Deku Deals). Reviews: 93% positive on Steam (14k+ reviews).
A first-person puzzler built on forced perspective and optical illusions, with the player escaping a surreal dream world. The main story is short, but the completionist time is about four times longer.
Best for: puzzle fans who like clever ideas over difficulty.

You are a stray cat exploring a decaying cyberpunk city with a small drone companion. The Steam page tags it Cats, Atmospheric and Mystery.
It is the longest and most expensive pick on this list, and also one of the best reviewed. Wait for a sale unless you really want it now.
Best for: cat lovers and anyone who wants a bigger world in a short game.

A Weekend Plan
If you want to actually finish things, stack games by mood. Here are two sample weekends using the main-story times above.
- Cozy weekend (about 10.5 hours): A Short Hike (1.5) plus Journey (2) plus Unpacking (3.5) plus GRIS (3.5).
- Story weekend (about 10.5 hours): What Remains of Edith Finch (2) plus Firewatch (4) plus Oxenfree (4.5).
- Puzzle weekend (about 9 hours): Portal (3) plus Superliminal (2.5) plus INSIDE (3.5).
Those are rough numbers. Your own pace, and whether you chase side content, will change them.
Gary’s Take
Short games are where full price hurts most, because you pay by the hour. By that math, Portal and Oxenfree at $9.99 and A Short Hike at $7.99 are the safe buys today. The $20 and up picks (INSIDE, Stray, Edith Finch, Superliminal, Unpacking) are all strong, but I would put them on a wishlist and wait.
If I had to pick one for a first weekend, it would be What Remains of Edith Finch for the story or A Short Hike for the vibe. Neither will eat your Sunday.
Keep digging: best co-op games for two, best PC games under $10, and how to tell a real game deal from a fake one.
