She Flew Home a Day Early and Found Her Sister Living in Her Place
A 29-year-old woman who travels for work gave her younger sister the keypad code to her apartment, with one job attached: water the plants and grab the mail. Then a work trip ended a day early, and she walked in at 11 p.m. to a very different scene.
She asked Reddit whether she was wrong to send her sister and the sister’s boyfriend out the door that same night. The story was reported by the Daily Dot, and the thread had thousands of upvotes and over a thousand comments when they covered it.

The Scroll in Brief
- A woman gave her sister her apartment keypad code for plants and mail only.
- She came home a day early and found the sister and the sister’s boyfriend settled in, with bags in her bedroom.
- The sister later admitted they had stayed most weekends while the poster was traveling.
- Marge’s ruling: the poster is not the villain. Sending them out at 11 p.m. was blunt, but the stays were the sister’s doing.
The Verdict: 😇 Not the villain. She gave limited access, it was used for more, and she was allowed to take her home back.
The Original Post
The thread above is the poster’s own telling, shared on r/AITApod. We have not verified it, and the Daily Dot noted that it could not independently verify the account either. The sister’s side was not available.
The Short Version
The poster says she is 29 and travels for work about two weeks a month. Her sister is 24 and lives with their parents. She gave her sister the code so the plants got watered and the mail got picked up.
A neighbor later told her they had seen the sister and a man carrying bags into the building. When she asked, the sister said she had only brought her boyfriend along to water the plants. The poster says she reminded her the code was for plants and mail, and the sister answered “obviously,” as if the question was unreasonable.
Her meetings wrapped up a day early, so she flew home Thursday night instead of Friday. She says she got in around 11 p.m. to find the TV on, the boyfriend on her couch and her sister in the kitchen wearing one of her hoodies. Their bags were in her bedroom, and she believed they had been sleeping in her bed.
The sister admitted the couple had been staying there most weekends while the poster was away. The poster told them to leave. The sister asked to stay until morning; the poster said no, because she had been traveling since 6 a.m. and wanted her own bed. They left by about 11:30 p.m. for a 45-minute drive to the boyfriend’s place. The next morning she changed the keypad code.
The sister texted that she had been humiliated in front of her boyfriend and treated like a stranger. According to the poster, she has not answered since.
What the Internet Said
Commenters mostly sided with the poster. The common point was that being caught doing something questionable is not the same as being humiliated, and that the anger came after the sister got caught. One commenter compared the sister to Goldilocks, helping herself to whatever was “just right,” and joked that the couple likely did more than sleep in the bed.
A smaller thread of the conversation is worth keeping in mind: it was late, the couple had a 45-minute drive, and a calmer “you can stay tonight, but we need to talk tomorrow” would have been gentler. Even so, few people argued the poster owed them a bed.
Marge’s Ruling
Marge rules not the villain for the poster. The code was given for two chores. Moving into her bedroom most weekends, with a guest, was never part of that deal, and the sister confirmed it was happening. When someone breaks the terms of your trust, you are allowed to take your home back, and changing the code the next morning was the sensible fix.
Was 11 p.m. harsh? A little. A tired traveler who finds strangers’ bags in her bed is not at her most diplomatic, though, and the sister had weeks of chances to just ask. If there is a goblin move here, it is the sister’s: asking forgiveness instead of permission, then taking offense when the answer was no. The fix is an honest apology from her and a clear plan for what comes next, like a guest rule or a spare key arrangement agreed in advance.
As always, this is one side of the story, and the sister’s version stays unknown.
